Show Summary

Green Balloon Club is a team of young nature lovers, Lily-Rose, Ant, Cat and Jay, who travel around the country in their balloon, investigating plants, animals and insects. Each member of the group has a different speciality, and they fly around with their balloonist Sky to find other Green Balloon Club members who send back reports on what they’ve spotted, from where they live. The show has a magazine format, with several different segments. As well as talking to other members, the team also submit questions to the “Ground Crew” who then set off to find the answer. The Ground Crew are different sets of children led by Nature Chris. In some episodes viewers also follow the four main characters to see what they’re up to, which could be anything from attending a doggie dance class to going bug hunting. The episodes feature a number of guest presenters including the ornithologist and conservationist, Bill Oddie.

Main Characters

  • Lily-Rose is the youngest of the crew and loves plants and flowers.
  • Ant’s an insect expert who loves bugs.
  • Cat’s an animal lover who really likes cats
  • Jay loves birds.
  • Sky is the young can-do balloonist who often leads the group on adventures along with the team’s dog Skipper

Educational Benefits

Green Balloon Club helps children to:

  • Think about green issues and the environment.
  • Learn more about natural habitats and develop an interest in the world around them.
  • Be inspired to get outdoors and learn about nature for themselves.
  • Learn about sustainability, renewable energy and recycling.

Website benefits and summary

The online activities extend children’s knowledge of nature and the world around them. Print out colouring sheets of animals and birds, and listen to the noises they make in the game What’s That Noise. Children can also colour in a butterfly, snail, fish, bird and a ladybird and watch them come to life in their own habitat in Springwatch and Colour.

Games

Bug Trail

Use the webcam to make a trail on the screen. You will need a red, blue or green object when using the webcam. You can also just use the mouse. This game shows children the different things that bees, butterflies, flies and moths are attracted to in nature.

Springwatch and Colour

Colour in a butterfly, snail, fish, bird and a ladybird and watch them come to life in their own habitat. You can then print off your creature in its habitat to keep at home.

What's That Noise?

A matching game that uses sound. Use the spacebar to move and press the return key to choose the correct creature. This game enables children to apply what they’ve learnt about the natural world.

Makes

Action Cards, EcoBeebies Star Chart and stickers and What I Did sheets

Print out the action cards, the star chart, stickers and ‘what I did’ sheets to keep a record of all the ‘green’ activity that your child has been up to. The action cards are specifically for recycling and saving water while the star chart and stickers are broader, and also give space for children’s own ecological ideas. The ‘what I did’ sheets give children a chance to record their environmentally friendly activity through drawing and hand painting.

Children like being given responsibility and independence. These print-outs give them something to focus on that will also help the environment and helps them make sense of their role in the wider world and how they can make a difference, however small.

Butterfly Finger puppet

Make a finger puppet of a butterfly and fly it around. Making finger puppets at home encourages children to be creative and once the puppets are ready to play children can use their imagination to make up stories.

Green Balloon Club badge

Become a member of the Green Balloon Club by making this badge and wearing it. Used alongside the star charts and action cards, this will reinforce children’s sense of civic and environmental responsibility.
